The Country Girl, another one of Clifford Odet's plays, was written in 1950. The play is about Frank, a has-been actor who is given a chance to make a comeback by director Bernie Dodd. At first Frank is skeptical because of his alcohol addiction, but he agrees to do the part. Frank lies to his director about Georgie, his wife, being the cause of all of his problems. At first Bernie believes Frank, and decides to tell Georgie to leave. However, when Frank gets very drunk one night and misses a call, Frank realizes the truth about Gerogie. This scene takes place right after Bernie told Georgie to leave Frank. In the scene, Gerogie confronts Frank about his lying and drinking problems. The actors in this scene have many of the same challenges as they did in Waiting for Lefty. This highly emotional scene ends with Frank alone and wallowing in self-pity. |
